One of the most common questions I get at Coffee & Cake is:
“Do I need a new tablet, or is this one just being awkward?”
Before you rush out and spend hundreds of pounds, there’s one simple thing we can check — how much usable memory your device actually has left.
And this can tell us a lot.
What Most People Don’t Realise
When you buy a tablet that says 32GB or 64GB, that’s not all available for your photos, apps and games.
A big chunk is already taken up by the operating system — the software that actually makes the tablet work.
For example:
- A 32GB tablet might only give you 18–22GB usable space
- The rest is taken up by the system
- Updates over time quietly eat more space
So what matters isn’t the number on the box.
It’s the gap — the delta — between total storage and what’s actually free.
Why This Matters
If your tablet only has 1–2GB free, you’ll start noticing:
- Apps won’t update
- Photos won’t save
- Messages fail to download
- The device feels slow
- It may even refuse system updates
Once you’re constantly “in the red”, the tablet starts struggling to function properly.
And here’s the key point:
If your operating system and essential apps are already taking up almost all the storage, there’s very little headroom left for the future.
That’s when we start asking the replacement question.
The Simple Rule of Thumb
At Coffee & Cake, I usually say:
- If you’ve got 10GB+ free, you’re fine
- If you’ve got 5GB free, we need to tidy up
- If you’ve got under 2GB free, your tablet is on borrowed time
Especially on older 16GB and 32GB models.
How to Check on an iPad
- Open Settings
- Tap General
- Tap iPad Storage
At the top, you’ll see a coloured bar showing:
- How much storage you have
- How much is used
- What’s using it
If that bar is nearly full, that’s your warning sign.
When It’s Not Worth Fighting It
If:
- The tablet is 6–8 years old
- It no longer receives updates
- Storage is permanently near full
- Apps are starting to say “Requires iOS 17 or later”
Then no amount of deleting photos will fix the bigger issue.
Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is retire it.
The Good News
This isn’t about selling people new gadgets.
It’s about making informed decisions.
Sometimes we can:
- Remove unused apps
- Clear old downloads
- Back up photos and delete them
- Reset and start fresh
And suddenly the device feels usable again.
Other times, we save you months of frustration by saying:
“Yes, this one’s had a good innings.”
Bring It Along
If you’re unsure, bring your tablet to the next Coffee & Cake session.
We’ll check the storage together and decide whether it needs a tidy-up… or a thank-you card.
No pressure. No jargon. Just practical help.
